Acne affects a great number of women and men. It is estimated that 90 percent of people between the age of 11 and 30 suffer from acne symptoms. Teenagers aren’t the only ones to be bothered by zits because acne affects adults too. There are many causes of the skin condition, including hormonal imbalance, overproduction of face oil, pollution, period or pregnancy, improper diet or stimulants. In most cases, acne is active for 3 to 5 years and fades. However, when untreated, it may last for 10 or even 20 years.
Harsh washing agents
Claiming that acne skin requires frequent washing with strong detergents is just a myth. The use of very aggressive, irritating and astringent cosmetics causes damage to the skin’s natural hydro-lipid mantle. Overdried skin defends itself by producing more and more sebum, which results in clogged pores, comedones and intensified acne.
Cleansers for problematic complexions should be formulated without strong detergents, be non-comedogenic, and shouldn’t cause a tight feeling and discomfort. Quality products for face washing should be rich in mild cleansing agents and ingredients for boosted skin repair, e.g. hyaluronic acid, zinc or niacinamide, plus they should maintain skin’s natural pH balance.
Ideally, acne sufferers should wash the skin twice a day: morning and at bedtime. In the morning, we recommend a mild gel or foam. Before sleep, remember to remove makeup thoroughly and clear the skin of any dirt. Avoid rubbing the skin, face cleansing gadgets and harsh scrubs.
Not moisturizing the skin
You think oily skin doesn’t need moisturizing? You’re wrong! Paradoxically, combination, acne and oily complexions need to be deeply nourished and revitalized on a regular basis. Pick lightweight, non-greasy products that are loaded with vitamins and nutrients improving the skin (vitamins A, C, E, hyaluronic acid, lactic acid, collagen or urea).
Not changing your face towel
You use the same towel for two weeks? Get a clean one immediately! Towels are the stronghold for bacteria which trigger acne breakouts. They also attract dust, dead skin cells and other impurities. If possible, change your face towel every two or three days. Get the one made from soft, non-irritating material so it doesn’t cause extra damage to delicate skin.
No sun protection
If you believe the sun cures acne, then you’re wrong… Overexposure to the sun causes redness as well as premature skin aging, permanent pigmentation spots, unhealthy look, and even cancer. Acne skin may appear more radiant and healthier-looking in the summer but you shouldn’t be fooled – the sun-kissed skin only camouflages the imperfections and the problem may get worse in the fall. Therefore, you should apply SPF-rich products every day regardless of the season and weather. By doing so, you save your skin from wrinkles, spots and severe acne.
Popping zits
That’s the worst thing you can do to your face! You won’t improve the skin by popping zits – you’ll only make it easier for bacteria to penetrate the skin. Improper facial extractions entail huge risk of scarring and discolored skin.
